Chapter 12

Olivia brought him to the Yale library. They stood in front of the Gutenberg bible.

“I thought you’d like it,” Olivia said quietly. “I don’t know why I’m whispering I guess it’s just ingrained into you to be respectfully quiet in a library.”

Peter touched the protective glass and then focused on the bible words.

“It’s beautiful, but I’m not really that religious, it’s a bit lost on me. The verses aren’t even numbered,” he said.

“They didn’t start numbering it like we see it nowadays until sometime afterwards. Thought it’d make for easier reading I guess,” she explained.

“Didn’t know that,” he mumbled.

He became aware of Olivia’s arm around him, she’d drawn him close to her as they were walking, but he had his mind on other things.

“Did you enjoy your revenge?” she asked, her perfume invading his senses.

“I don’t know, maybe I shouldn’t have killed him like that. Just so…”

“Cold blooded?”

“I just snapped. I couldn’t stand seeing his face. His words were grating on my brain, it was driving me insane.”

He turned to her, they were dangerously close for just being friends.

“I wonder if I’m losing my humanity more and more. I wonder if I’m turning into a monster? Is this how it begins? Justifications for acting to your primordial self?”

She smiled at him Nothing more potent than a pretty girls smile. She was gorgeous. He could see why Lee was so in love with her. He might have been too, if He hadn’t met Maddie first.

“No, not a monster. You did what you did out of human emotion. And you’ll live with it and learn and you’ll forget about it. Revenge was yours and you took it, like a man.”

She pulled her arm back and rummaged through her purse. She produced a joint.

“Want some?” she asked.

“No.”

“Yeah drugs are bad,” she put it back in her purse, “The library’s pretty cool isn’t it?”

He looked back at the bible.

“It’s was weird to think how important that book was to us and how before the printing press only a few got to read it. Now everyone can. It’s too bad it’s so hard to live by hey?”

Peter nodded.

Olivia reached over and grabbed his face. He turned with her hand.

She leaned in…

“Olivia…” he muttered before she kissed him. Her soft sweet lips met his and he didn’t do a very good job of fighting back. He wanted to pull her closer, but instead he pulled back and took a deep breath. Damn that perfume!

”Remember…” Olivia started looking down at the ground. She slowly looked up at him. “I wanted to tell you something?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s…” she walked away, and walked around a round table, her hand out touching the top of the chairs. She stopped on the other side of the table. Putting it between him and her. “Never mind, it’s too soon. I’m sorry.”

“Maddie, I ” he don’t know what he was thinking. But Olivia’s face went red. He rubbed his face with his hands not looking at her. “I’m sorry, I know you’re not Maddie, of course you’re not.
